A team's score includes extras as well as runs credited to batters. Therefore, adding only the individual batting scores normally leaves a gap. Reconcile that gap with the extras breakdown before treating it as an error.
Reconcile a complete team score
This hypothetical scorecard has no other penalties or adjustments. Each number is a run total, not a count of deliveries.

Extras are 5 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 12. The team score is 125 + 12 = 137. The extras subtotal is a check, not another category to add on top of its components.
Why the bowling total is different again
Runs charged to bowlers include batter runs, no-ball extras and wides. Byes and leg byes are not charged to them. In this example, the combined bowling runs are 125 + 3 + 1 = 129. The remaining eight runs are the five byes and three leg byes.
Thus, 125 in the batting column, 129 in the combined bowling column and 137 in the team total can all be consistent. These figures measure different categories.
Avoid double counting on a no-ball
If a batter strikes a no-ball and runs are credited to that batter, those runs are already inside the batting total. The separately recorded no-ball extra belongs in its own extras category. Do not add the entire delivery's runs again as no-ball extras.
Similarly, a wides field records wide runs. It need not equal the number of wide delivery events, because an event can contribute more than one wide run.
A practical reconciliation order
- Add the batter scores from one innings.
- Add the listed extras components once.
- Compare their sum with the team total.
- Compare bowling runs using only the categories charged to bowlers.
- Check for penalties, corrections or incomplete records before declaring a discrepancy.
